What factors drastically shorten the service life of EPE filter elements?

Three major root causes lead to drastically shortened service life of EPE filter elements.

Firstly, improper parameter selection. Excessively high filtration precision such as 3 μm or 6 μm is mistakenly applied to dusty return lines; dense pores get clogged quickly with accumulated contaminants. Where the filter’s rated flow fails to leave a 1.2-times safety margin against system peak flow, excessive fluid velocity compresses contaminants onto the media surface and pushes differential pressure out of limits in a short period.

Secondly, deteriorated hydraulic oil conditions. Water ingress causes oil emulsification and sticky sludge, which adheres firmly inside filter pores and blocks the media far faster than solid particulate pollutants. Mixing inferior or incompatible hydraulic oils triggers chemical reactions and sediment formation that gradually damage filter media. High ambient temperature accelerates oil oxidation and speeds up filter deterioration further.

Thirdly, improper on-site installation and harsh operating surroundings. Reversed filter installation reverses oil flow direction and lets contaminants pile up on the inner side of filter media. Heavy dust from mining and metallurgy sites invades the hydraulic system via breather caps of oil tanks and keeps contaminant concentration above normal level. Repeated hydraulic shocks and severe pressure pulses deform inner support cages over long-term compression and result in filter layer rupture and premature failure.

Reasonable filter sizing, qualified hydraulic oil and standardized installation effectively prolong the normal service life of filter cartridges.
