Many industrial water treatment and wastewater reuse projects encounter inlet water with dramatic temperature fluctuations, ranging from cold winter raw water to hot process wastewater. Temperature variation directly changes water viscosity, salt solubility, membrane flux and salt rejection rate of reverse osmosis systems. At low temperatures, water viscosity rises sharply, reducing permeate flow and increasing system operating pressure.

This recycled wastewater contains abundant colloidal particles, soluble organics, nutrients and microorganisms. During long-term RO system operation, colloids easily deposit and form dense gel layers on membrane surfaces, while microbes multiply rapidly and build up biological slime. Colloid and microbial fouling increase membrane surface resistance, reduce permeate flux, raise differential pressure and degrade salt rejection performance.
