Oil Purification for Power Stations: Vacuum Oil Purifier Reduces Equipment Insulation Risks

Power station transformers, reactors and oil-filled high-voltage switches rely heavily on insulating oil to deliver two core functions: electrical insulation and heat dissipation. During long-term continuous operation, insulating oil inevitably absorbs moisture, dissolves gas and accumulates fine solid contaminants. Moisture is the biggest threat to dielectric strength; even trace water molecules can sharply lower the breakdown voltage of oil, creating hidden risks of partial discharge, tracking and insulation breakdown. Dissolved fault gases such as acetylene, hydrogen and carbon monoxide signal abnormal discharge or overheating inside equipment, while carbonized particles and oxidation sludge form conductive paths that further weaken insulation performance. Once insulation fails, power stations face forced outages, expensive component repairs and serious grid stability hazards. Regular oil purification therefore becomes an indispensable part of station asset protection.

The vacuum oil purifier provides an integrated purification solution tailored for power station insulating oil. It works through staged physical treatment without introducing chemical additives that may damage oil formulations. First, contaminated oil enters a temperature-regulated heating section, raising oil viscosity appropriately to facilitate mass transfer while avoiding overheating that accelerates oil aging. Next, oil flows into the vacuum separation chamber. Under deep vacuum, dissolved water vapor and fault gases escape from the liquid phase and are extracted by vacuum pumps. After degassing and dehydration, the oil passes through multi-stage precision filter elements, which capture carbon particles, fiber debris and oxidation sediments to upgrade oil cleanliness. After treatment, the oil’s dielectric strength recovers obviously, water content drops below standard limits, and hazardous dissolved gas concentrations are suppressed.

Proper on-site operation is critical to secure stable insulation risk control. Operators need to test oil indexes including breakdown voltage, moisture content and gas composition before treatment to set flow rate, vacuum degree and target temperature reasonably. Closed pipeline connection is adopted throughout the purification process to prevent secondary moisture and dust contamination from ambient air, which is common in humid or dusty substation environments. For on-line bypass purification, operators must monitor pressure difference of filter elements continuously; blocked filters will reduce treatment efficiency and may cause system backpressure. Periodic calibration of vacuum gauges and temperature sensors ensures that purification parameters stay within valid ranges.

Compared with the traditional method of draining and replacing insulating oil, vacuum purification brings distinct economic and operational advantages. Oil replacement generates high procurement, transportation and waste oil disposal costs, and requires lengthy shutdown arrangements. Vacuum oil purification can be implemented either off-line during planned maintenance or on-line for light contamination, recovering qualified insulating oil for repeated use. It continuously controls contamination levels, slows aging of paper insulation inside transformers, and extends the service life of both oil and high-voltage equipment.

For power stations, insulation risk management is a long-term task rather than one-time remediation. A standardized purification schedule combined with regular DGA and dielectric testing helps operators track oil health trends. By deploying vacuum oil purifiers as routine maintenance equipment, stations keep insulating oil in qualified status, cut the probability of insulation accidents, reduce unplanned downtime, and guarantee safe and steady power output.
